Mold in basement removal

What are some reasons for mold growth?

Often the source of the damage caused by mold growth comes from a small, unnoticed leak that can go on for quite a long time. By the time you notice the water, it’s likely that mold has already been growing. Some examples of these sources can include:

  • Drains and pipes leaking.
  • Windows leaking because they’re not sealed properly, or left open.
  • Floods caused by storms
  • A/C units causing condensation.
  • Steam from hot tubs or humidity from an indoor pool.
  • Steam from showers, or a faulty bathroom ceiling vent.
  • Leaking Roofs.
  • A broken cold water inlet valve causing your refrigerator to leak.
  • Hot water heater leaking. Common in mobile homes where the water heater is hidden out of view, or homes without a basement.

Why mold in the home is major risk to your health:

The earlier that you catch the mold problem, the better. The mold that you see growing is just the surface. It gets down below the surface in porous materials such as wood and carpet padding and especially pressed wood products such particle board. As it grows, the airborne particles and mold spores multiply and spread throughout the air in your home. When it gets into the supporting structure of your home, your structural integrity will be compromised.

Allergic reactions, chronic breathing issues, headaches, fatigue and asthma are just some examples of health problems that can be caused by Black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum). Many strains of mold can cause harm and health issues, although black mold is the most commonly known. Someone else in your home could be very sensitive to these effects while you are seemingly unharmed. Some are just more sensitive to mold than others. You can contact us for a free estimate and we’ll come out for an inspection.

Mold Damage on Walls

When are mold remediation services necessary?

  • When you are unsure of how widespread the problem is. What is visible on the surface may just be one small sample of what is hidden below. You could clean up mold from the surface of your walls and floor but fail to see the growth in the subfloor below.
  • When cleanup would agitate mold and spores would be released into the air. The cleanup process could be hazardous and we have specialized equipment to minimize these risks. Your family and pets would be protected from being exposed to these carcinogenic and toxic mycotoxins.
  • When any porous surfaces in your home have been soaking up water. Mold gets into wood, insulation and wallpaper and are impossible to clean. Instead, these materials need to be removed and replaced.
  • After water damage occurs, mold is very likely to be present in any areas that aren’t fully dried out immediately and are left in a wet condition for weeks. If you are unsure, give us a call.

Deodorization From Mold & Mildew

Pre-loss condition or better means that there won’t be a lingering odor of mold and mildew after we are done. After the affected areas are repaired, we remove the odors caused by water and mold damage. We do this with ozone generators, hydroxyl generators, thermal fogging and HEPA filters. We’re also able to restore household items such as furniture that would otherwise have to be replaced, thus lowering your overall costs.

Mold in Bathrooms

Moisture in the bathroom creates a perfect environment for mold growth to occur. Caulking in the shower, the porous grout between your tiles, behind wallpaper are all common spots for black mold. You might not think anything of a little condensation on the walls but this could create problems.

Minimizing moisture in the bathroom can do a lot to prevent mold from growing. Using the exhaust fan while showering and for 10-20 minutes after, or opening a window if you can can help tremendously. Dripping faucets and pipes could be another issue so address these if you can and maintain good circulation of air.

Mold in Air Ducts

As your air ducts carry cold air through the system, condensation can accumulate on the outer edges of the ducts themselves. This could exacerbate existing mold problems and spread spores throughout your home every time the system turns on.

We offer full air duct cleaning services that will remove any dust, mold, mildew or other allergens and contaminants from your HVAC system’s ductwork. Your indoor air quality can be noticeably improved instantly.

It is recommended by the EPA to have your air ducts cleaned to remove lingering spores when mold is present in your home elsewhere.

Basement Mold Removal

Basements are a common area where moisture can accumulate in the home. Mold can start growing and go undetected. Humidity and moisture might get to high levels from a leaking foundation, water from a sump pump system, your washer machine, etc. Water can seep in due to the close proximity to ground water sources outside.

The warm environment in the basement from your home’s heating system creates a favorable climate for mold and fungus to grow in if there is a moisture source present.

Structural damage to your home can occur when mold gets into your floor joists, wall studs or other supporting structures. This also creates a pathway for airborne particles to reach to the rest of your home.

It varies quite a bit. Could be anywhere from multiple days to just a few hours. We’ll be better able to give you a time frame if you call us for a free estimate.

Yes, if your home has any wet or humid areas, using a dehumidifier could help keep these areas dry. This creates an environment that is less favorable for mold to grow.

Running exhaust fans can keep moisture from accumulating in the bathroom and kitchen areas.

Immediately addressing spills. If a large amount of water spills in your kitchen for example, dry it out immediately with towels and aim a fan at the lower edges of your cabinets to help dry out any moisture.

You may need to check on your vapor barriers and ventilation.

Mold spores get everywhere, vacuuming thoroughly can minimize how many mold spores are in your home. Give extra care to get to areas that you might miss like behind furniture.

In some areas, yes if these are non porous surfaces like countertops or windows. Once it gets into wood, OSB, carpet padding or insulation, simply cleaning the surface with bleach won’t be enough. Even the dead mold spores may still trigger allergic reactions in some people. We recommend removing and restoring the areas instead of just cleaning.

Some is manageable if you are using a proper mold treating paint. This is only recommended for very small areas. If you’re unsure, it would be best to have it looked at.
