Know the Causes of Basement Flooding

Storms? Pump failure? Snow melt? Broken water lines? Water flows to the places with the least resistance, which includes downward, into open spaces. Basements can flood at any time, even if there has never been a flood in this area before. Flooding can happen in both wet and dry conditions, for numerous reasons.

Heavy rains are an obvious threat to flooding but melting snow can also be a threat to flooding, depending on the melt rate, the saturation of the ground, and the runoff infrastructure. Depending on the grade around your home, water will drain back toward the house and pool at the foundation.

When snow is melting, the surface temperatures may be above freezing but the exterior sump pump hoses are often still frozen solid, buried at the base of the snow. This means that the sump pump will run nonstop, trying to empty the overflowing drain tile system, but not actually be able to reduce the water level, and it will eventually overheat and fail. The water left in the backfill zone and the footing area will begin to seep throw foundations and basement walls.

Know All Flooding Is Not Equal

Water damage has three (3) categories. Category one (1) is “clean water” that is considered sanitary, such as water from a broken water line in the house. This type of water is considered low risk since exposure does not pose significant danger. Examples of category one (1) water might be water supply line breakage, ice/snow melt, rainwater, water from toilet tanks. This type of water damage is generally salvaged and dried more easily, offering much easier restoration.

Category two (2) is “grey water” that contains poses significant exposure to contaminated water, carrying the unsafe potential of viruses, molds, bacteria, and the possibilities of other contaminants and microorganisms. Examples of category two (2) water fall into categories of discharged water and stagnant waters, such as washing machine and dishwasher discharge or overflow, aquarium breakage, toilet overflows with contaminants, and hydrostatic pressure seepage. Additional action is required with “grey water” to ensure the contaminates are removed, disinfected, and thoroughly restored or replaced.

Finally, category three (3) is the most dangerous of all, “black water.” Black water is significantly contaminated with high-risk materials, posing significant health and property dangers. This type of damage requires highly specialized equipment and training. Black water can include sewage, backflows of waste lines from beyond the trap, seawater teeming with microorganisms, water from flooded rivers and natural waterways, as well as storm water from wind-driven rain.

Knowing the difference between the categories is helpful but knowing who to call in an emergency is even better. Our staff are trained in identifying, assessing, and removing each category of water, ensuring both life and property are healthy and whole.

Know the 3 Bs of Basement Flooding Action:

1) BE QUICK: Stop the water! Depending on the cause of the flooding, you may have the ability to stop the water flow, by turning off source. If the flooding is caused from internal issues, turning off the water main at the street is the best way to stop the water. If the flooding is from an external source, call the professionals for equipment to remove the water immediately.

2) BE SAFE: Don’t try to solve the problem yourself. AVOID THE BASEMENT. You should assume that there is an electrocution risk in the underground area with water. Never step into the basement water, for any reason. Turn off the electricity from an external source or call a professional electrician or the power company for assistance.

3) BE THOROUGH: Document for insurance. Take photographs and/or videos as soon as it is safe to do so. Providing documented accounts of the damage before restoration began will make the insurance process more efficient and less stressful.
